Morse code is a communication system that uses a series of short signals (also known as dots or dits) and long signals (also known as dashes or dahs) to transmit characters.

The initial version of it was developed by Samuel F. B. Morse as a method to transmit natural language through the telegraph in the mid-19th century. If you’re not familiar with the Morse code, we strongly recommend to first try Morse Mania, our other app, which is designed to teach you Morse code, and then you can come back to practice your skills.

Morse Mania has 700k+ downloads and has been rated 4.8/5 in the Google Play store and 4.9/5 in the App Store by more than 12k users.

You can sign in with your Google account, Facebook account or Apple ID (on iOS devices) and your personal details will not be shared.

If you prefer to try the app out first, you can also sign in as a guest. However, once you sign out, your account will be deleted automatically and you can not sign in the same guest account anymore.

Morse Chat

Once you sign in, you’ll see 3 big buttons which correspond to 3 main ways of chatting.

Public Rooms. A number of rooms (10 WPM or less, 15 WPM, 20 WPM or more, Test room and so on) has been created to allow chatting with fellow Morse code enthusiasts. These rooms are open to everyone. Contact us if you have an idea for a new public room.

Private Rooms. These can be created by premium users, and joined by any user (premium or not) who gets the room ID and password (case sensitive) or is invited by an existing room member. Click the add person icon to add a member to the room; click the stop icon to unsubscribe to the notifications of the room; click the exit icon to exit the room (please see the 2nd screenshot).

Direct Messages (DMs). These are private messages between two participants. Simply create a DM by searching the other user’s display name or call sign.

Receiving messages

Messages in Morse Chat are in the form of Morse code, hence you can’t read them directly.

To hear the message, simply tap on the loudspeaker icon. You can adjust the pitch of the sound in settings. Premium users can also choose a different output mode, e.g. using the device’s flashlight, vibration, or a visual indicator on the screen to see the message.

By long pressing the message, you can choose to see the user info of the sender. You can also see the details of the sender by tapping on their display name or call sign in the message.

Premium users can also see visual representation of the message (dots and dashes), and the auto-translated textual version by tapping the eye icon once and twice respectively.

Sending messages

To send a message, tap Morse code sequence using the big button at the bottom of the room screen.

Messages will be sent automatically some time after you finish typing, unless you cancel it. It can also be sent manually beforehand. The auto-send feature can be disabled in settings.

By long pressing the message, you can choose to delete your message, and other members of the room won’t be able to see the message either.

If you’re new to Morse code, click on the question mark icon on the room screen to see Morse representations of the symbols (as shown in the 2nd screenshot).

Premium users can also take advantage of the auto-translate feature which transforms the text you type into the Morse code automatically.

Notifications

In order to get notified of new messages when you’re not using the app, subscribe to receive notifications. This can be done by tapping the bell icon in the upper right corner of the room screen.

You are automatically subscribed to the private rooms you’re added to, but you can easily unsubscribe by clicking the stop icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

Notifications of direct messages are delivered without explicit subscription.

You can change such notifications in the Settings of your device.

Settings

  • Choose the frequency and output mode of the Morse messages (audio, blinking light, flashlight, vibration).
  • Adjust the transmission speed when using auto-translate.
  • Change the theme (Cyan, Bright, Dark, Black).
  • Enable/disable interface sound, auto-send and auto-translation.
